FTM 2019 makes it possible for users to properly record relationships in the family using relationship types and relationship statuses. This is made possible to have an all-inclusive and precise family history representation whether in biological relationships, marriages, adoptions, or other types of relationships. Follow these steps on how you can properly organize relationships in FTM 2019.
Specifying a Relationship Type and Relationship Status in Family Tree Maker
When entering people into your tree, FTM automatically places default relationship types for couples and parent-child relationships. But users can change those relationships as desired with the Managing Relationships feature. This degree of flexibility accommodates detailed recording of family relationships.
Selecting a relationship type for a couple
If you must change the relationship type for two individuals in your tree, do the following:
- Open FTM 2019 and navigate to the Tree tab within the People workspace.
- Highlight one of the individuals in the couple.
- Navigate to the Person tab.
- Select the Relationships button in the tab top.
- Within the list of relationships, highlight the appropriate person.
- Within the right-hand edit panel, go into the Relationship drop-down and select the right type of relationship.
- This enables you to indicate whether the relationship is marital, domestic partnership, or other.
Selecting a Couple’s Relationship Status
In addition to indicating the relationship type, you can also indicate the couple’s relationship status:
- Open the Tree tab within the People workspace.
- Click on one of the people in the couple.
- Click the Person tab.
- Click the Relationships button and choose the name of the spouse/partner.
- In the edit box on the right-hand side, select the right status from the Status dropdown.
- Possible statuses can be Married, Divorced, Separated, or Widowed, reflecting the relationship type that existed now or in the past.
Changing a Parent-Child Relationship Type
You also can alter a child’s relation to a parent, biological or otherwise:
- In the People workspace, open the Tree tab.
- Click on the child for which you need to change the relationship type.
- Click the Person tab.
- Click the Relationships button.
- Choose the parent’s name from the list of relationships.
- Use the Relationship drop-down menu on the edit panel to select the appropriate type (e.g., Biological, Adopted, Step, or Foster).
Winding Up!
Specifying relationship types and statuses in Family Tree Maker 2019 keeps family relationships correctly documented. It provides a richer, more meaningful family tree with more than biological relationships recorded – including adoptions, marriages, divorces, and other household dynamics.
